Where can I find lossless audio (legally)?

Good news: we're living in the golden age of legal lossless. A decade ago it was a niche pursuit; today you can get CD-quality or better from most major services. Here's where to look — and, just as importantly, how to make sure what you're getting is the real thing.

The landscape below is organized by how permanent each option is, because that's the decision that actually shapes a library: streaming rents you access, purchases give you files, and physical media gives you masters. Most serious collectors end up using all three for different jobs.

Streaming services

The easiest option — no files to manage, huge catalogs:

One caveat: streaming lossless requires decent bandwidth and the right settings — most apps default to lossy on mobile data, so check your quality settings. And on Bluetooth, everything gets re-compressed anyway.

The settings check deserves thirty seconds of your time, because every service buries it slightly differently and defaults betray you. Look for separate toggles for Wi-Fi versus cellular — set Wi-Fi to lossless/hi-res freely, and cellular to whatever your data plan tolerates. Watch for a "download quality" setting distinct from streaming quality; offline files deserve the lossless option since bandwidth isn't the constraint. And disable any "automatic" or "data saver" mode, which will quietly negotiate you back down to lossy the moment the connection hiccups — and never tell you it did.

Also worth knowing: lossless streaming and "downloaded for offline" are different features with different license terms. A streaming subscription's downloads expire when the subscription does — they're cached, not owned. If permanence is the point, the next section is your section.

Download stores (own your files)

If you want actual files you own forever — which I'd argue is the whole point of a lossless archive — these stores sell DRM-free downloads:

A few habits that pay off across all of them. On Bandcamp, always pick FLAC over WAV unless you have a specific reason — same audio, half the download, and tags that survive the trip. On Qobuz, the subscriber discount on purchases is genuinely substantial, so the store and subscription pair well if you buy regularly. And everywhere: download promptly and back up. "Purchased" usually means re-downloadable, but catalogs change, stores close, and the copy on your drive is the only one guaranteed to exist next decade.

On hi-res pricing, be a skeptic: stores charge more for 24-bit/96 kHz versions, and sometimes that premium buys a genuinely superior master. Sometimes it buys the same master with eight extra bits of silence. There's no way to know from the store page — which is why the verification habit from the end of this article applies to purchases most of all.

The underrated option: CDs

Seriously. Used CDs cost a couple of dollars, they're effectively DRM-free lossless masters, and ripping them to FLAC takes minutes with free software like Exact Audio Copy or XLD. A thrift store CD haul is the cheapest legal lossless library you'll ever build — and you get liner notes as a bonus. Vinyl is great too, but ripping it well takes real effort and good equipment; CDs are bit-perfect with zero fuss.

Two tips turn CD ripping from "fine" to forensic-grade. First, use a secure ripper — Exact Audio Copy (Windows) or XLD (Mac) — rather than iTunes/Music defaults. Secure rippers re-read each sector until the results agree, and compare against the AccurateRip database of other people's rips of the same pressing; a clean match means your copy is bit-identical to thousands of others, which is as close to provenance certainty as consumer audio gets. Second, keep the log file the ripper produces. It's a permanent record that the rip was verified, and it settles any future doubt about where a file came from.

One caveat that surprises people: some CDs, especially 90s and 2000s pressings, have aged — disc rot is real, and a secure ripper is also how you find out. A disc that fails AccurateRip or can't get matching reads is telling you its data is degrading; rip what you can and note it as compromised in your library.

Free and open sources

There's also legitimately free lossless music out there: artist giveaways on Bandcamp, netlabels releasing Creative Commons music in FLAC, live concert recordings at the Internet Archive's Live Music Archive (taper-friendly bands like the Grateful Dead), and classical works from sources like Musopen.

A caution specific to this category: free sources have the weakest provenance of all. Concert recordings are usually honest about what they are — an audience capture is an audience capture — but netlabel and archive material occasionally passes through lossy stages on its way to the FLAC you download, especially older uploads. Free lossless is wonderful; it's also the category where a five-second spectrum check earns its keep most reliably.

Worth adding: free doesn't mean disposable. Live Archive recordings in particular document performances that exist nowhere else on earth, and the tapers' community has preserved them with more care than the music industry has shown many commercial masters. Treat the good sources well — credit the tapers, respect the trading etiquette — and they keep producing.

A word of caution

Wherever you get your files, "lossless" on the label doesn't always mean lossless in the file. Upscaled fakes circulate widely, and even legitimate-looking sources occasionally have them. If you're building an archive, it's worth verifying your files — run them through the analyzer and check that the frequency content goes all the way up. A genuine CD-rip FLAC will show content up to 22.05 kHz; a fake will show a suspicious cutoff around 16–20 kHz — though some masters roll off gently near 20 kHz on purpose, which the analyzer accounts for.

Choosing between the streaming services

Since their lossless catalogs overlap heavily, the decision usually comes down to everything except the codec. A few differentiators that actually matter:

Catalog depth in your genres. The mainstream catalogs match at roughly 90%+ for popular music, but they diverge in niches — regional releases, older jazz and classical pressings, underground electronic. Before committing, spend a week searching for your own obscure favorites; the service that has them is the service for you.

Metadata and liner-note culture. Qobuz includes digital booklets for a large share of its catalog, and its classical metadata (composer, work, conductor, ensemble) is the only one built by people who clearly listen to classical. If you're a classical or jazz listener, this alone settles the question. Everyone else's classical search remains an exercise in frustration.

Ecosystem lock-in. Apple Music integrates with the local library you've spent years curating; Tidal and Qobuz treat your purchases and streams as one collection; Amazon folds into Alexa households. None of these is a codec question, and all of them will affect your daily experience more than ALAC-versus-FLAC ever will.

Artist payout. If supporting artists factors into your choice, per-stream rates differ meaningfully between services and Bandcamp Fridays aside, purchases beat streams by orders of magnitude everywhere. Streaming for discovery, purchasing for the records you love is a defensible ethical equilibrium.

What about vinyl?

Vinyl sits outside the lossless conversation in an interesting way: it's analog, so the concept doesn't apply — there's no codec, no bitrate, and nothing to fake at the format level. A record is what it is. The quality questions are different (pressing quality, master source, condition), and they're judged with a different toolkit — mostly your ears and the deadwax etchings.

Two things vinyl buyers should know in the context of this site. First, many modern vinyl pressings are cut from digital masters — which is not a scandal, just a fact of modern production — and occasionally that master was itself a lossy source, which is a scandal with a spectrogram. Rips of such pressings circulate widely. Second, the "warmth" that defines the format's appeal is partly euphonic distortion — real, pleasant, and technically an inaccuracy. Loving vinyl and caring about bit-perfect files are compatible hobbies, as long as you know which one you're doing at any given moment.

Frequently asked questions

Is YouTube a lossless source? No — everything on YouTube is lossy (typically ~128 kbps AAC or Opus), including uploads labeled "FLAC," "lossless," or "24-bit." The label describes what was uploaded, not what YouTube re-encodes it to, and YouTube re-encodes everything. What about used stores and marketplace sellers offering FLAC downloads? File downloads have no physical authenticity anchor, so reputation is the whole game. Established stores with label relationships are generally safe; anonymous marketplace sellers offering thousands of albums at suspicious prices are the single most reliable source of upscaled fakes ever documented. Check anything from the second category before it enters your library.

Is hi-res worth paying extra for? Sometimes — when the hi-res version is a genuinely different master, which you can only learn from reviews, forums, or your own comparison. The format itself guarantees nothing audible. If the 16/44.1 and 24/96 versions come from the same master, save the money and spend it on more music.

How do I keep a purchased library safe long-term? Two copies minimum, one off-site or in cloud storage, and FLAC as the format of choice — it's checksummed (corruption is detectable), tagged robustly, and readable by everything that will plausibly exist in thirty years. Then verify new acquisitions as they arrive, and the archive mostly maintains itself.
